3 Reasons Why You Need a Dietitian in Today's Age

Hi, I'm PJ. A Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian and one of the people behind YOU% Nutrition, an online nutrition consultation service based in Cebu. I want to tell you about one of my clients, Migs, because his story is probably more familiar to you than you'd think.

Migs is a freelance graphic designer who has worked from home in Cebu for the past four years. When the pandemic pushed his work fully online, so did his whole routine. His "commute" became a walk from his bed to his desk. His meals turned into whatever was closest. Usually leftover rice reheated with a fried egg, a bag of chips between deadlines, energy drinks to push through late-night client revisions. He told me he hadn't set foot in a gym in over two years, and honestly, he didn't miss it. What he missed was having energy that lasted past 3 p.m.

Migs found us through Instagram, of all places, after seeing a post about how "eating healthy" doesn't have to mean giving up rice or lechon. He messaged me, we booked a video call around his work hours, and that one conversation started a change that's still paying off for him today. I'm sharing his story because it captures exactly why we built YOU% Nutrition, and why we believe more Filipinos especially here in Cebu need a dietitian in their corner right now.

Because "eating right" doesn't look like it used to

Filipino eating habits have changed faster than most of us have noticed. Rice-and-ulam meals eaten together at the table have been replaced, for a lot of us, by whatever's fastest: fast food combos, convenience store meals, food delivery apps, or in Migs' case, whatever was already in the fridge. On top of that, more Cebuanos are working from home, doing BPO shifts, or freelancing which means less walking, less structure, and meals that happen whenever there's a gap between tasks rather than at consistent times.

Generic diet advice simply doesn't hold up against that reality. A meal plan copied from a foreign wellness page doesn't account for the fact that you're eating at 2 a.m. because that's when your shift ends, or that your "kitchen" some days is a delivery app on your phone.

This is exactly why I don't hand clients a template. When Migs and I started working together, I asked about his actual day: when he ate, what was in his kitchen, what he could realistically cook between client calls, even his budget for groceries that month. We built his plan around his real life, not an idealized one. That's the entire philosophy behind YOU% Nutrition. Your plan should be built around you, not the other way around, and that's something a one-size-fits-all program or an app can't do for you the way a real conversation with a dietitian can.

Because lifestyle diseases are creeping up quietly

Diabetes has been climbing steadily across the Philippines, with government data showing hundreds of thousands of confirmed cases nationwide and health officials have been clear that many more cases go undiagnosed simply because people don't get checked until something feels wrong. High blood pressure and heart disease follow a similar pattern, building quietly for years before a single lab result finally reveals it.

Migs found this out the hard way. A routine check-up for a visa application flagged his cholesterol as high, at 29 years old. He wasn't overweight in an obvious way, and he felt "fine," which is exactly the problem. These conditions rarely announce themselves early. He came to me with that lab result and honestly, not much of an idea what to do with it.

As a licensed Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian, reading lab results and turning them into a practical eating plan is exactly what I'm trained to do. We didn't overhaul Migs' entire diet overnight. We made a handful of specific, sustainable changes based on what his numbers actually meant for him. Three months later, his follow-up results had already improved, and he didn't have to guess his way through it or rely on random advice from a Facebook group. That's the value of working with someone qualified: catching a warning sign early, before it becomes a diagnosis.

Because you need habits that last, not another diet you'll quit by February

If you've ever followed a strict diet trend, you know how it usually goes. It works for a couple of weeks, then a birthday, a fiesta, or plain exhaustion from being too restrictive brings it crashing down (often with guilt attached). Filipino life revolves around food and celebration, from lechon at family reunions to late-night ihaw-ihaw with friends. A plan that doesn't leave room for any of that was never going to last.

What changed things for Migs wasn't a list of forbidden foods. It was learning how to enjoy lechon at his cousin's wedding without treating it as a "cheat" he had to make up for. We built habits flexible enough to bend around his actual life deadlines, celebrations, bad weeks and all instead of habits that demanded perfection. That's what made it something he could keep up for months, not just weeks.

This is the whole reason YOU% Nutrition exists as an online service rather than a walk-in clinic. Real, lasting change doesn't happen in one appointment, it happens through ongoing conversations, check-ins, and small adjustments over time. Doing that online means Migs never had to leave his desk to fit a session in, and it means I can support clients wherever they are in Cebu, or anywhere else in the Philippines, on a schedule that actually works for them.

Why Work With a Dietitian Online?

A lot of people assume seeing a dietitian means taking time off to sit in a hospital waiting room. That's exactly the barrier we wanted to remove when we started YOU% Nutrition.

Consultations happen over video call or chat, meal plans are sent digitally so you can reference them anytime, and follow-ups fit around your schedule instead of the other way around.

Whether you're working night shift in IT Park, freelancing from home like Migs, or based outside Cebu entirely, you get the same personalized, one-on-one guidance from a licensed professional.

No commuting, no waiting rooms, no generic templates.

The Difference?

Migs still works from home. He still has deadline weeks where things get messy. But his cholesterol is back in a healthy range, he actually has energy in the afternoons now, and he no longer feels like he's guessing every time a new diet trend shows up on his feed. He didn't need to overhaul his whole life, he needed a plan built around the one he already has.

If a check-up result has been sitting in the back of your mind, or if you're simply tired of chasing whatever diet is trending this week, I'd love to help you figure out what actually works for you. You can reach out to YOU% Nutrition on all our social media accounts to book a consultation wherever you are in the Philippines, we can work together online, on your schedule.
